Long single stem roundish leaves all dark purple appears to be about to flower.

Hi Penny, your plant is one of the border Sedum, which are taller in stature than most of the groundcovering types.
This one appears to be Purple Emperor which is one of the darkest, and also one of the hardiest withstanding intense cold. They are usually grown in a border with other herbaceous perennials like Rudbeckia and Hemerocallis, which act as a foil to the gorgeous dark mahogany or purple foliage.
The flowers unfortunately are a bit disappointing, as what your picture shows is pretty much what you get – however, the butterflies and bees love it, so it’s worth growing just for that.
