it is c. 35cm tall, and cylindrical and has very sharp pointy spikes – i acquired it from John the Vintage Gardener at Newham City Farm’s Summer open day; John is ninety-two years old, no wonder it had to be repotted as it’s so vigorous 🙂

This is Euphorbia, which is huge genus of extremely poisonous plants. You can see more about them here.
I really wish people would label plants properly, especially those that could pose a problem with their caustic sap. John really should know better at his age!
To keep it vigorous, give it good bright light, and don’t over water it.
