The Numbers
by: Jacki Cammidge, Certified Horticulturist

The numbers on fertilizer packages mean something, and are an indication of what you can expect from using that particular fertilizer. What the numbers mean in this case is that the nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous levels are all the same.

The formulation could be anything with the same numbers, such as 10-10-10. This formulation is a good basic type of fertilizer, which will help the plant grow.

If you want it to flower, look for the middle number to be the biggest, such as 10-20-10. For more winter hardiness, the final number should be higher.

What I often do is use a balanced fertilizer (20-20-20)to get the plants healthy and growing, then switch in the early summer to a ‘flower booster’ type fertilizer (10-20-10), to get the flowers going.
