a handful of hypertufa hands

I had so much fun with these hypertufa hands – they’re tricky to make, because they break so easily, but boy, are they effective.

If you have some surgical gloves, a bit of Portland cement powder, some peat moss and perlite, these are the craft to try – be prepared for a bit of a learning curve with them.

I started making flat ‘hands’ and then had the brilliant idea to put them in something to make them curve, enough to make a little container for a few sweet little Sempervivum.

When you have as many plants as I do, it’s not a problem finding that perfect little group of hens and chicks that only grow to the size of a few inches.

These will eventually need to be repotted, but for now, they’re quite happy in the half a cup of soil, and perfect drainage – there is no possibility that the soil will become water logged in these great planters.

Make a selection for your display, and get ready for the gasps of surprise from your visitors.

Hi Marcy, there are no secrets here – it’s all a case of trying different things to see what works/is a disaster. The Succulent Crafts E-Course will include instructions and a full tutorial.

Vinyl Concrete Patch
by: Anonymous

I used vinyl concrete patch instead of portland cement. It is more expensive but stronger and smoother. I loved this idea!

Add fiber
by: lisa

If you haven’t tried using liquid fiber yet to add to your hypertufa, you might want to try that. It really enhances the strength. It can be found in small squeeze jars at Home Depot or Lowe’s.

I’ve seen so many plans for hypertufa “hands”. The most amazing examples have finger nails. I haven’t seen any directions that tell how or when to add them. I would be so grateful if someone who’s done it could be super specific about how/when it’s done. Thanks!!!!

There are some thoughts about the fingernails on hypertufa hands here.
