Malus ‘Inglis’
by: Jacki Cammidge, Certified Horticulturist

The botanical name of White Angel Crabapple trees is Malus ‘Inglis’, if you want to be totally correct. The hardiness zone is usually listed as 4, which means that it is hardy enough to withstand a good winter chill. This is important, as these trees need a cold period. However, that doesn’t meant they won’t grow in your zone, just that they are not as happy in Zone 9.

The ultimate size of this variety is around 20-30 feet tall, and approximately the same distance around. Plant it where it won’t need to be moved or pruned back (or worse, cut down) if it outgrows the space.

The flowers are white, and open out of buds that are pink. The fruit, a tiny apple, is red. The birds are attracted to them if they’re left on the tree in the fall.

This variety is quite disease resistant, but it is susceptible to fire blight if it’s pruned in the summer, so only prune to shape or remove damaged or diseased branches in early spring.
